I Might Start Expecting the Best

It can be hard to move to a new place. You don’t know anyone and you don’t know your way around. If you move to a new town, especially a small town, a lot of the people have known each other their whole lives and it can feel like you are outside looking in. I was afraid of these things when I found out that I would have to relocate to Tennessee for work. I have terrible social anxiety, so as I looked for apartments for rent in Cordova TN, I worried that I would move there and live like a hermit even more than I was up in New York. I was more apprehensive than you could possibly imagine, so I moved there hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I moved there on a Sunday and the moving truck was late so I sat on my front stoop and waited. And waited some more. While I was sitting there the screen door on the apartment next door swung open and a handsome, rugged man, dressed in a shirt and jeans stepped out. He asked me what I was doing and I explained my predicament. He was quick with the jokes and had an infectious smile. When the truck finally got there, he insisted on helping with the moving so I could get moved in as fast as possible, since it was getting so late. He was such a gentleman.

A couple days later he knocked at my door and asked if I wanted to come to the local diner with him, he explained that that was where everyone in town in our age group spent their Saturday nights and he wanted to introduce me to a bunch of people. I was nervous but excited and as it turned out they loved me and I loved them. He and I started dating soon after and I couldn’t be happier. I’m so glad i moved here.
